Global snooker updates from this week in an easy 5-minute read

Wilson Wins German Masters

World Champion Kyren Wilson triumphed 10-9 in a thrilling German Masters final, overcoming Barry Hawkins at Berlin's Tempodrom. This marks Wilson's second victory in the event, having previously won in 2019. It’s his first since the passing of his manager, Brandon Parker, for whom the trophy is now named. Parker played a key role in bringing snooker to Germany.

Wilson, fresh off a tough loss to Shaun Murphy at the Masters, has enjoyed a stellar season, with three titles, including the Xi'an Grand Prix and Northern Ireland Open. Hawkins, despite his strong performance, fell short again, after losing to Judd Trump earlier this season. The match was fiercely contested, with Hawkins leading 5-4 at one point, but Wilson’s resilience prevailed. In a dramatic decider, Wilson secured the win with a long-range red. He expressed pride in the victory and honored his late manager’s memory. Hawkins praised Wilson’s performance, admitting his opponent was the stronger player.

Yang wins 2025 WSF Championship

Gao Yang triumphed 5-3 over Brian Cini in the final of the 2025 WSF Championship, claiming the biggest title of his career in Morocco. This victory also secured his return to the professional World Snooker Tour for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons. Gao, who had reached the final last year, added this win to his previous success at the WSF Junior Championship in Malta, becoming the first player to win both titles. He’s now rejoining the professional circuit after a three-year absence.

Gao dominated the tournament with five century breaks, including a 140 in his quarter-final. In a high-quality final, Cini, a multiple national champion from Malta, fought back to level the match at 3-3, but Gao sealed victory with two consecutive frames. Gao now aims to break into the top 64, training with professional players like Si Jiahui and Zhao Xintong. The tournament, held at the Radisson Blu Resort Saïdia Beach, attracted around 250 entries and concluded a successful fortnight in Morocco.
